Pharmacy Technician Recruitment and Retention: A Crisis Situation

Pharmacy technicians are responsible for a wide range of crucial functions that support patient care, including sterile compounding, inventory management, medication order distribution, billing, and many other essential medication and administrative functions. Hospitals and health systems are currently experiencing severe shortages of pharmacy technicians impacting the pharmacist workforce and pulling pharmacists away from direct patient care where they play an important part in ensuring safe use of medications and optimal medication outcomes. This continuing pharmacy education activity will discuss the current landscape of the pharmacy technician workforce and challenges of recruitment and retention. Implications to pharmacy department processes, workflow, and patient care will be examined and strategies to address these issues will be introduced.
